Rebecca’s Observations//
The One Thing Your Dating Checklist Can’t Measure
After years of introducing people and watching what works, the pattern is remarkably consistent. It is one of the biggest reasons people miss the right person even when the right person is standing in front of them.

I want to share something I have noticed after years of introducing people, coaching them through relationships, and watching what actually works. It is one of the biggest reasons people miss the right person even when the right person is standing in front of them.
The Observation
Most people I meet come in with a list. Sometimes it is written down. More often it is mental. Height, career, family goals, education, personality, hobbies, values, deal-breakers.
The lists are almost always thoughtful. And the lists are almost never the reason people fall in love.
Because when a match actually works, I usually hear something like this. He was not exactly what I thought I wanted, but I feel completely at ease with him. Or, she surprised me. She was not my usual type. But talking to her is the easiest thing in the world.
A list can protect you from the wrong person. It cannot deliver you the right one.
It is a pattern researchers have documented for decades. When the Gottman Institute studied what actually predicts lasting relationships, the deciding factor was never a checklist of traits. It was how two people connect.
What the list misses is not obvious. It is not usually values or life goals or lifestyle. Most people are reasonably good at identifying those. What the list misses is emotional texture. Whether someone’s presence relaxes you or activates you. Whether their sense of humour meets yours. Whether the way they hold silence, disagreement, or difficulty makes you feel safer or lonelier. It is the same thing I keep circling back to in he checks the boxes, so why am I still unsure.
So here is what I have learned to tell people over the years. Keep the list for the deal-breakers. The real ones. The values, the timelines, the things you genuinely cannot live without. Then get curious about the rest. The people who end up building long, real relationships are almost never the ones who found the perfect match on paper. They are the ones who stayed open long enough to notice something the list could not measure.
What They’re Really Asking
Am I staying open to the person, or am I holding out for the profile?
That is the honest version of the question. And the answer that leads somewhere is almost always to loosen the grip on the profile, without abandoning your standards, and let a real person show you who they are. That openness is the quiet heart of what emotionally available dating actually looks like.
One Thing I Tell Clients
Your list was written by the version of you who had not met them yet. Sometimes the person who is right for you looks a little different than you imagined. That is not a compromise. That is what actually falling for someone tends to feel like.
Your list was written by the version of you who had not met them yet.
One of the most valuable things a matchmaker can do is look past your list. I get to know you as a person, and then I introduce you to someone whose emotional texture actually fits yours, not just their credentials. If that is the kind of introduction you are looking for, you can explore matchmaking, or see the full range of dating services to find the option that fits your situation.
