The honest answer
Is hiring a matchmaker worth it?
Hiring a matchmaker is worth it if your main problem is access, meaning you are ready for a relationship but not meeting enough compatible people. It is usually not worth it if your problem is patterns, meaning you meet plenty of people but things keep falling apart the same way. In that case coaching will do more for you, and it costs considerably less.
I am going to talk you out of it sometimes
I am a matchmaker, so you would expect me to say yes. But I have talked plenty of people out of hiring me, and here is the honest breakdown.
It is worth it if
- You are genuinely ready. You are not still processing your last relationship.
- Your problem is access, not skill. You are lovely and self aware and simply not crossing paths with anyone compatible.
- You are time poor. You have the money and not the hours. Outsourcing the search is rational.
- You are done with apps. Not bitter, just finished.
- Privacy matters. Swiping publicly is not an option for you.
It is not worth it if
- You want someone to fix it for you. A matchmaker introduces you. She cannot date for you.
- Things keep ending the same way. More introductions just means more of the same ending. Coaching first.
- You are not actually ready. Nobody can match you into readiness.
- You want a guarantee. Anyone who promises a relationship is selling you something.
- The money would hurt. If it is a stretch, start with coaching.
The thing nobody tells you
Most people who think they have an access problem actually have a skills problem, and most people who think they have a skills problem are being too hard on themselves.
Figuring out which one you are is worth doing before you spend anything at all. That is genuinely most of what happens on my first call with someone, and the call is $25, credited toward any program if we work together.
